Vrankrijk 40 Years!!

Abortion Network Amsterdam

We are a group of volunteers who came together to create a network of support for women and pregnant people who don’t have access to safe abortion. This could be the case for a number of reasons:

– They don’t have access to legal abortion in their country of origin (e.g. Poland, Malta).
– The country they live in doesn’t provide second trimester abortions.
– They don’t have access to legal abortion because of their status in the country they live in.

Compared to other European countries where abortion is also legal, the Netherlands is of specific interest because of the 22 weeks until which an abortion is allowed. Most countries only provide abortions during the first trimester, which is until 12 weeks.

Amsterdam Street Medics logo

Amsterdam Street Medics

Amsterdam Street Medics provide first aid, emergency care (at actions, demos, and other activist hot spots), assistance with health related issues, aid in locating resources (such as mental health support, addiction treatment, etc), and listening. We offer periodic training for new medics. We want to work with others in the community to care for each other so we can be dangerous together. We can be reached at AmsterdamStreetMedics@gmail.com

SKSU

SKSU

In Amsterdam people have been squatting/occupying houses (‘kraken’ in Dutch) for decades. The SKSU, or the Student Squatting Information Center, provides information on squatting and the right contacts necessary to squat something yourself. In this way, the SKSU aims to provide a direct solution to people without a place to stay and at the same time address issues like housing shortage and vacancy in a political way.

Squatting your own place in a safe and sustainable way can be a complicated process and if you are a foreigner planning to squat something in Amsterdam, we would recommend visiting multiple kraakspreekuren / squatting information centers to ensure you are aware of all the important issues and to get to know as many local and experienced squatters as possible.

The SKSU is open on every Thursday, from 19:00 to 21:00, in the Vrankrijk, Spuistraat 216, a legalised squatted social centre in the center of Amsterdam.

Stop the War on Migrants

Stop the War on Migrants is a direct action group that focuses the way the EU militarizes border security, both at its own (external) borders and in third countries, and the arms and security companies, such as Airbus and Thales, lobbying for and profiting from this.

Stop Wapenhandel

Stop Wapenhandel (Stop Arms Trade) is an independent Dutch research and campaign organization opposing arms trade and the arms industry. It investigates the lobby, the financing and the alternatives. Of special concern is the role of the arms industry in militarizing border and climate policy.

Arrestanten groep

The Arrestantengroep was created because people who have been arrested during actions, demonstrations, etc. (and who may be detained for longer) need support. However, we don’t see ourselves as a service group, we see ourselves as an independent part of a left-wing radical movement, anti-racist, anti-sexist and anti-fascist.

The Arrestantengroep provides information and offers direct assistance with demonstrations, etc.

Sea Watch

The Mediterranean Sea is the deadliest border in the world. Sea-Watch was founded at the end of 2014 as an initiative of four families and a group of activists who no longer wanted to stand by and watch the mass dying at Europe’s southern border. Since then, thousands of volunteers from all over Europe and the world have joined Sea-Watch. The organization has in the last 8 years developed into an international maritime rescue and human rights NGO. Sea-Watch is active at sea with a ship, in the air with monitoring and documenting human rights violations from her reconnaissance aircraft and on land actively advocating the political demand for a #SafePassage – safe and legal routes to Europe.

Alarm Phone

Watch the Med Alarm Phone was initiated in October 2014 by activist networks and civil society actors in Europe and Northern Africa. The project established a self-organized hotline for people in distress in the region of the Mediterranean Sea: a phone number that people on the move can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The main objective is to offer people in distress at sea an additional option to make their SOS noticeable. The Alarm Phone documents the situation, informs the coastguards, border guards and other state authorities, and, when necessary, mobilises additional rescue support in real-time. This way, we can, at least to a certain extent, put pressure on the responsible rescue entities to avert pushbacks and other forms of human rights violations against refugees and migrants at sea. The network is consists of volunteers, most of whom have been active at the external borders of Europe for many years in networks such as Welcome to Europe, Afrique Europe Interact, Borderline Europe, Noborder Morocco and Watch The Med.

Later in life he composed and played electronic music with the aim of manipulating moods and atmospheres. As DJ Fitgirl he has played in underground as well as mainstream spaces known and loved in Europe. Next to that he has composed and made videos for artists. Currently he is expanding his fascination for atmospheres and moods by creating happenings and rituals. By playing with light, music and movements participants are brought to an altered state. Fitgirl is also a political statement against body shaming and binary gender standards. In his practice he is keen on exposing them (in a playful manner).

Vrankrix and the Amsterdam €nrichment

Documentary – English subtitles
Just like other popular European capitals, it seems like Amsterdam is becoming a city where project managers and the ever-expanding tourism industry are running the show. Everywhere? NO!!
The subcultural meeting point Vrankrijk is one of the last strongholds resisting the tide in the ever-growing affluence of trendy Amsterdam.

Annegriet Wietsma has been a director and documentary maker for more than 35 years. She also writes and makes award winning podcast.

Wilma has been the neighbor of the Vrankrijk since many years. Just like the Vrankrijk she has seen the neighborhood change into a gentrified mess and had to fight for her home. She’s also one of the main stars in the documentary Vrankrix!
