Saturday, Jan 18, 2025 | 21 00- 03 00 | no door/ free
whatthefuckqueer presents: (take me back to) 1989 – this month’s queer party on Sat, 18 Jan. For this night we asked three DJs to curate influential electronic dance music, exclusively produced and released between the years 1979 and 1999. Over six hours, DJ Xpress COATI, THE MOUNTAIN @pavel.spasovski, and @dj_babette will take us on a journey through classic and lesser-known tunes from dance music history. Expect to hear dicso and electro, italo and hi-nrg, rave and breakbeat, acid, techno, house and everything in between
Did someone say… RoXY?! As we’re prepping to go old-skool for this Saturday’s TAKE ME BACK TO 1989 party at Vrankrijk, let us introduce you to our DJ’s for the night, and the music they raved up to: DJ XPRESS COATI (21:00-23:00h) “I was particularly excited to get the invite to spin at this party, because I get to indulge one of the things I most like exploring musically. As an 80s kid, I have strong memories of the dance songs that were hits in the UK – lots of synth-pop, what we now call ‘Italo’, hi-NRG and early house. As an adult, one of the things that has fascinated me about this period is how there were parallel stories happening in other countries around the world, but particularly Europe. What dance music were they making in Belgium, Denmark and Italy, Turkey, France or India? Piecing these stories together is a big part of my research and listening practice; and so it’s a thrill to incorporate some of this into my set, which promises clouds of synthy dry ice, spacey disco whoosh, and pioneering tunes that bubbled, wriggled and squiggled long before anyone had even heard of acid house.” THE MOUNTAIN (@pavel.spasovski) (23:00-01:00h) “It’s my strong belief that music transcends time and space. It should bring you to places you have never been, and make you experience the unknown. In fields, in basements, in hangars, in clubs, on exotic islands, in car tracks on your way to the secret rave. This is the sound I want to bring back: the music that made you jump up to go out and dance ‘till the last drop of sweat. From Detroit to Manchester, to Tokyo and Berlin, expect a raw acid house techno set with flash backs to the RoXY Hard Wednesday Nights in the 90’s Amsterdam!” DJ BABETTE (@dj_babette) (01:00-03:00h) “Tracing back the tracks that pulled me into house for this event is exciting and tbh also quite melancholic and emotional at moments. It’s incredible how music – especially when it’s been decades since you last heard it – can catapult you back into who you were at the time. This year I will turn 50. I started DJ’ing just over a year ago (debut here at Vrankrijk!!) something all the younger versions of myself never even considered as an option. I will play for you the tracks that mattered to me, of some I remember exactly where I was and how I felt when I first heard them. Plenty classics, some lesser know stuff. I WILL slip in some bootleg Gloria Estefan and, beware, I will NOT shy away from 2 Unlimited – a banger is a banger.” Take Me Back to 1989, this Saturday at Vrankrijk. Door open: 21:00h.
